Having flu for the past ten days has given me a lot of time to think about where I want to go online. Recently, I’ve found that although my content has been popular, I’ve become ever so slightly boring. I’m not referring to the stuff I write for other websites, notably Technorati, but my own personal stuff. The Internet is all the same these days; I remember the days when writing a review of something was a big deal, but now everybody does it. I’m not saying that there is an issue with lack of creativity going on here, but that it’s getting more difficult to come up with something original that will make you stand out from the crowd.
I don’t want to fall into the bottomless pit of being a mundane tech reviewer, but I also don’t want to continue in the direction which I am now heading, which seems to be a sort of narrowing horizon. Forgive the bullshit here, but the stuff I write about is becoming increasingly popular among a very specific type of person. My view is that in order to succeed you have to appeal to everyone’s interests, while simultaneously incorporating your own unique appeal. Broad, rather than specific, if you like.
Influence is another important factor to consider. The majority of the stuff I write about is inspired by the style of someone else; after all, you have to draw from stuff you know, right? This leads me on to what I’m going to do next. For one reason or another, my life will become increasingly more hectic over the next couple of months, so I’ll need to start prioritising one thing over another.
I hate having a ‘plan of action’; I prefer to let things come to me naturally, and see where it takes me next. To be honest, though, some serious shit will go down soon and I need to let that take priority over the stuff I do online. That’s why I want to revamp everything I do. That means that I’ll start working on more standalone content, such as reviews, as opposed to just giving thoughts on things. I don’t know precisely what this will include, but I might start making videos again, or I might set up my own forum. So I think the message is to stay tuned to my Technorati and Emkwan Project posts for the highest quality, professional content, and to stay tuned to this site for some more interesting and personal content (sidebar: I might start doing more reviews of films and music, rather than exclusively focusing on technology).
Aside: I’ve also had a lot of people ask me recently about what exactly it is that I do. It’s amusing for me to sit here and read all your guesses about how old I am and what kind of job you think I have, lol. The funniest thing is, you’re all wrong. I don’t think it’s important for you to know about me; what matters is my content, and how I deliver it. I know that in order to bond with someone fully, you need to know about that person. However, an online relationship is nothing like a real life relationship, so the same rules don’t apply.
